Football: JSerra is ready with more trick plays
Contact ReporterVarsity Times Insider

Jim Hartigan hardly resembles someone you'd guess has a football playbook loaded with trick plays.
But the JSerra head coach will surprise you at any time. Last week against Los Alamitos, the Lions twice scored touchdowns on trick plays that featured receiver/backup QB Riley O'Brien throwing touchdown passes to starting quarterback Matt Robinson.
"You're going to see more," Hartigan promised. "We haven't shown a lot of them. We have multiple trick plays ready to go."
It helps to have versatile plays like Robinson and O'Brien.
"Both can throw, both can run," Hartigan said.
So with the Trinity League beginning next week, beware. The Lions could be working on more trick plays during their bye week.

JSerra earns victory that will draw attention

STAFF WRITER
MISSION VIEJO – JSerra is going to move up in two polls and just might make a debut in another.
The Lions defeated Vista Murrieta, 28-14, Thursday at Saddleback College.
Vista Murrieta (3-1) is above JSerra (3-1) in the CIF-Southern Section Division 1 top 10 poll. Vista Murrieta is ranked No. 5 there. JSerra is No. 6.
Vista Murrieta is in the California top 25 as compiled by CalHiSports.com. JSerra is not in the state top 25. JSerra is No. 7 in Orange County and with Thursday’s win is likely to move up in that top 25 poll.
JSerra junior quarterback Matt Robinson threw for 201 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore slot back Thomas Huff caught two of the touchdown passes. Riley O’Brien caught the other, and ran for a touchdown, too. Nick Callen rushed for 100 yards on 24 carries.
O’Brien also had kickoff returns of 65 and 64 yards. Robinson, O’Brien, Callen and company got superb blocking from JSerra offensive linemen Jake Boldac, Hayden Carter, Ryan May, Jake Parks and Zelan Tupuola.
JSerra lost to Bishop Amat, 35-28 last week.
The game was delayed for several minutes in the third quarter when JSerra junior defensive back Peter Esparza suffered an injury to his right leg. His leg was immobilized and Esparza was taken by stretcher to an ambulance that him took him to a hospital.
JSerra got off to a great start. O’Brien took the opening kickoff at JSerra’s 1-yard line and returned it to the Vista Murrieta 34. Seven plays later, Robinson and slot Huff connected on a 21-yard touchdown pass for a 7-0 lead.
The Lions scored on their second possession. Again it was a Robinson-to-Huff touchdown pass, this one covering 14 yards, for a 14-0 lead.
JSerra pushed the lead to 21-0 in the second quarter when O’Brien, lined up at quarterbackon second-down-and-goal at the Broncos’ 3-yard line, took a direct snap and carried it into the end zone.
Vista Murrieta sliced the lead to 21-6 on Javelin Guidry’s 7-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. The extra-point kick was deflected away at the line of scrimmage.
O’Brien scored on a 6-yard reception later in the quarter to make it 28-6. Vista Murrieta got a touchdown and two-point conversion to create the final 28-14 score.
Vista Murrieta did not get a first down or complete a pass until the second quarter. The Lions outgained the Broncos by a large margin in total offense in the first half, 236 yards to 76.

Football: Matthew Robinson throws three TD passes in JSerra upset win over Vista Murrieta

The schedule keeps getting tougher, but JSerra isn't backing down one bit.
No. 6-ranked Vista Murrieta came to Saddleback College on Thursday to take on the Lions and left with a 28-14 defeat thanks to JSerra quarterback Matthew Robinson, who threw three touchdown passes.
JSerra (3-1) opened a 21-0 halftime lead. Sophomore Thomas Huff, who has lots of speed, caught touchdown passes of 21 and 14 yards. Riley O'Brien added a two-yard touchdown run.
Meanwhile, JSerra's defense kept the Broncos (3-1) from breaking off any big plays and pressured quarterback Karson Greeley. Javelin Guidry finally put Vista Murrieta on the scoreboard with a touchdown run in the third quarter.

O'Brien added his second TD of the night, catching a short pass from Robinson.
JSerra has played Sacramento, Alemany and Bishop Amat and ends its nonleague season against Los Alamitos next week before entering Trinity League play against the likes of unbeaten Mater Dei and St. John Bosco.
What's clear they have a terrific leader and versatile player in Robinson, who makes great decisions and knows how to get the ball to his playmakers.

JSerra enters season with confidence

CONTRIBUTING WRITER
SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - The JSerra football team was one of the most dominant teams in Orange County during the early, nonleague-portion of the 2015 season.
The Lions won their five nonleague games by an average of 31 points, including an impressive 42-14 win over Chino Hills.
The Lions didn't fare as well in the Trinity League. They lost their first three league games, which prevented them from earning an automatic bid to the CIF-SS playoffs. But instead of going through the motions in their last two games, they defeated Mater Dei and Orange Lutheran.
“It says a lot about the heart of these kids,” JSerra coach Jim Hartigan said Wednesday. “They got tired of losing and not feeling good about themselves. I was proud that we kept fighting. It’s who we are and what we do.”
The Lions believe their performance in the last two games of 2015 are a sign they can beat any team in their league.
“The competition is really good and we can beat anybody," senior Riley O’Brien said. "But anybody can beat us too, so we have to keep working.”
JSerra, which failed to earn an at-large berth to the playoffs a year ago despite its 7-3 overall record, has added two of the region's top teams - Bishop Amat and Vista Murrieta - to its schedule this season.
“We have been undefeated the past few years in preseason against good opponents, but I had all five games to fill this year and we are playing great teams,” Hartigan said. “What the end of last year showed was that if you play us, you better be prepared.”
TIME TO SHINE
In 2015, O’Brien and then-sophomore Matthew Robinson each was given playing time at quarterback. This season, Robinson will be the starter, while O’Brien will play various skill positions.
“Matt (Robinson) is a great quarterback," O'Brien said. "It will be good to get him more reps and get college looks.”
Robinson feels he has improved since it became clear he was going to the full-time quarterback.
“It feels good to be out here getting better in practice. Getting all of the reps definitely helps,” Robinson said.
O’Brien was first-team All-Trinity league cornerback in 2015, and he will play on offense and defense this season.
“Both those guys pushed each other last year and got better," Hartigan said. "We made a decision to move Riley (O’Brien) to multiple positions on offense. We opened the door for Matt and he’s worked hard and improved.”
Matt’s brother Nick was a prolific quarterback at JSerra. He led the Lions to a 9-1 record in 2014. Nick was a walk-on at Georgia last season and is playing at Saddleback College in 2016.
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Hartigan’s son Connor is a vital player for the Lions defense. The junior can play all three linebacker positions and will play on all special teams.
“He’s a smart kid. We don’t talk about football much at home, but he takes it all in,” Hartigan said. “I think his best football is ahead of him. I’m proud of him. He’s done a really good job.”
Connor saw some playing time last season, but he suffered a concussion that set back his progress.
“It’s interesting playing for him sometimes," Connor said of his father. "He definitely gets on me but he has helped me become a better player.”
Hartigan said he treats his son just like every other player on the team. But Connor feels there is a little added pressure playing for his father.
“I can’t go out here and jog and play half speed," Connor said. "I’m expected to be an example out here and everyone looks at me to see the example I set.”

Football recruiting: JSerra's Riley O'Brien picks Penn

April 25th, 2016, 8:58 am ·

· posted by DAN ALBANO

JSerra defensive back/quarterback/wide receiver Riley O'Brien (5-10, 165) has committed to Penn, a move that could reunite the junior with his brother, Conor.
Riley was a versatile contributor last season, playing quarterback and defensive back for the Lions.
His brother, Conor O'Brien, played receiver and defensive back and will be a freshman at Penn in the fall. The brothers will join former JSerra defensive back Sam Philippi at the Ivy League school.
Penn tied for first in the Ivy League last season with Harvard and Dartmouth and finished 7-3 overall.
JSerra players have been gravitating to the Ivy League. Former All-County defensive end D.J. Bailey signed with Harvard.
